Background Information

The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is an American twin-engine fighter and attack aircraft, with its first flight on July 27, 1972. Developed from lessons learned during the Vietnam War, it was the U.S. Air Force's response to the Soviet MiG-23 and MiG-25 fighters. Part of the FX (Fighter Experimental) project, McDonnell-Douglas won the contract in 1969. The F-15 was designed to minimize maintenance time, incorporating user-friendly elements and automatic systems. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100 afterburner engines, it produces 4,500 kg more thrust than its weight, enabling tight turns at high speeds and the ability to carry substantial external weapon loads. The F-15 replaced the F-4 Phantom, providing superior performance while halving maintenance time.

Since entering service, multiple variants have been developed. The F-15C and D are second-generation single- and two-seater versions introduced in 1979, featuring upgraded avionics. The F-15D also tested ASAT anti-satellite missiles in the 1980s. The F-15E Strike Eagle, introduced in 1988, expanded the role to air-to-ground assault while retaining air superiority capabilities, and is expected to remain in service until 2035. Other variants include the F-15J, produced under license in Japan. Exported to countries like Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, the F-15 has achieved notable combat success, including Operation Desert Storm and the 2003 Iraq invasion. Technical specs (F-15E): maximum speed 2,660 km/h, climb rate 255 m/s, service ceiling 19,500 m, range 5,580 km, fixed armament 1 × M61A-1 20mm cannon, and up to 10,660 kg of external weapons.
